Pakistan Economic Survey 2023-24 has been released. The Agriculture Section of the Pakistan Economic Survey also focused on the livestock data 2024. Besides livestock population, it also covered the livestock production data. It has details about milk production in Pakistan and Meat Production in Pakistan. Along with meat and milk production data, it also covers poultry data from Pakistan. It also gives details about livestock GDP along with milk data and meat data.

Livestock Data 2022-23

Livestock GDP, Growth Rate, and Livestock Data 2024

According to the Pakistan Economic Survey, the overall growth rate in the country was 2.38 percent. The agriculture sector recorded the highest growth rate of 6.25 percent this year during the last 19 years. According to the latest livestock data 2024 economic survey, the livestock sector supported the country’s economy along with the agriculture sector, this year also. If we talk about, Livestock GDP, the share of livestock in agriculture value added is 60.84%. On the other hand, the share of livestock in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) was 14.63 percent. This Livestock GDP share highlights the importance of this sector in the economy.

Moreover, the growth rate in the livestock sector was 3.9 percent. On the other hand, the value of the livestock sector increased from 5587 billion to 5804 billion with the increase in livestock GDP share. Livestock accounted for 1.6 percent of the total exports.

Livestock Data 2024 and Livestock Population

Besides Livestock GDP and growth rate, the economic survey also gives the details of livestock population. According to the Pakistan Economic Survey 2023-24, the livestock population and livestock production increased last year and caused an increase in livestock GDP. The number of cows increased from 55.5 million to 57.5 million. The number of buffaloes increased from 45 million to 46.3 million. Moreover, the number of sheep increased from 32.3 million to 32.7 million and the number of goats increased from 84.7 million to 87 million. Furthermore, the number of camels increased from 1.1 million to 1.2 million.

The number of horses and mules did not increase and remained at 0.4 million and 0.2 million respectively. On the other hand, the number of donkeys increased from 5.8 million to 5.9 million. These figures are based on the Livestock Census 2006.

Provincial Livestock Population

Based on the livestock data 2024 of the Pakitan Economic Survey and the Livestock Census 2006, we can also calculate the provincial livestock population. By this ratio, the number of animals also increased in the provinces. The number of cows in Punjab is 28.04 million, Sindh 13.47 million, Balochistan 4.38 million, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 11.62 million. Moreover, the population of buffaloes increased to 30.07 million in Punjab, 12.43 million in Sindh, 0.54 million in Balochistan, and 3.27 million in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Moreover, the number of sheep reached 7.85 million in Punjab, 4.89 million in Sindh, 15.80 million in Balochistan, and 4.15 million in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Based on the Pakistan Economic Survey 2023-24 Livestock Population data, the number of goats in Punjab is 32.07 million, Sindh 20.33 million, Balochistan 19.05 million, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 15.53 million. If we talk about camels, their number is 0.50 million in Balochistan, 0.37 million in Sindh, 0.25 million in Punjab, and 0.08 million in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Poultry Data 2024 and Growth Rate

The poultry sector is an important part of the livestock sector and employs 1.5 million people. This 1056 billion Rupee industry has been growing at an average annual rate of 7.3% over the past decade. Moreover, according to meat data, Poultry accounts for 40.7% of the total meat production.

According to the Poultry Data of Economic Survey, the number of poultry birds also increased. The number of rural poultry increased from 94 million to 95.5 million. This includes 13.92 million chickens, 47.17 million hens, and 34.41 million chicks. On the other hand, the number of ducks, etc. decreased from 0.34 million to 0.32 million. If we talk about commercial poultry, its number increased from 1.79 billion to 1.97 billion. This includes 1.87 billion broilers, 78.41 million layers, and 16.61 million breeding stock. Moreover, the total number of poultry birds is 2.1 billion while the number of day-old chicks is 1.99 billion.

According to poultry data 2024, there is 2.4 million tons of poultry meat production. This Poultry data includes 2.2 million tons of broiler meat and 135,000 tons of domestic chicken meat. According to poultry data 2024, The number of eggs increased from 23.9 billion to 25.2 billion. This includes 20.4 billion commercial and 4.7 billion indigenous eggs.

Milk Data – Milk Production Data

According to the Milk Data of Economic Survey, milk production has increased from 67.8 billion liters to 70.1 billion liters. This milk production data also gives further details. The annual production of cow milk is 26.10 billion liters and buffalo milk is 41.89 billion liters. Moreover, sheep milk production is 42 million liters, goat milk is 1.1 billion liters and camel milk is 956 million liters. This milk production data relates to the livestock population.

This milk production data and milk data also gives the details of availability to human consummation. According to milk data, out of 70.1 billion liters, 56.5 billion liters are available for human consumption. 20.88 billion liters come from cows, 33.51 billion liters from buffaloes, and the rest from sheep, goats, and camels. This milk data elaborates the difference also. Of the 20 percent of the milk that is not available for human consumption, 5 percent is consumed by calves, while 15 percent is waste in the supply chain.

Meat Data

Pakistan Economic Survey also highlights the meat data along with milk production data. According to this meat data, meat production increased from 5.5 million tons to 5.8 million tons. This includes 2.6 million tons of beef, 0.82 million tons of mutton, and 2.4 million tons of poultry. Poultry includes 2.2 million tons of broiler and 135,000 tons of domestic chicken meat.

Livestock Data 2024 about other Livestock Products

Besides milk data, meat data, and poultry data, the Pakistan Economic Survey also covers other livestock products. Last year, 20.7 million large animal hides were obtained. These include 10.9 million cow hides, 9.7 million buffalo hides, and 118,000 camel hides. On the other hand, small animal skins were 65.18 million. These include 12.4 million sheep skins, 33.5 million goat skins, 3.7 million lamb kid skins, and 15.6 million goat kid skins. The number of fancy skins was 19.3 million.

According to the data, the production of wool is 49600 tons, hair 32700 tons, offals 492000 tons, blood 81000 tons, hooves and horns 72300 tons, fat 342500 tons, dung 1.5 million tons, bones 1.1 million tons, and 307,200 tons of head and trotters. Casings yielded 64.8 million while guts yielded 22 million.

Livestock Projects

Besides, poultry data, livestock data, meat data, and milk production data, it also focuses on government performance. the economic survey also highlights federal government livestock projects and initiatives for livestock development. Last year, Pakistan imported 244.2 tons of calf milk replacer, 487 tons of cattle feed pre-mix, and 2.6 million semen of Friesian, Jersey, and Brahman.

According to the Economic Survey, Antimicrobial Resistance is the leading project in the country. After the completion of the first phase, the second phase of the Fleming Fund Country Grant is going on. Moreover, an Animal Identification and Traceability project is also underway in collaboration with FAO. In this project, software modules have been developed. The government will implement it across Pakistan in the second phase through the Animal Husbandry Commissioner Office.

Along with this, a project organized by the National Veterinary Laboratory is also underway to eradicate PPR. A further Animal Disease Surveillance and Information System project is also in progress which is in the approval stages. Along with this, work has been done on the improvement of veterinary infrastructure and capacity building. This is with the support of the World Organization for Animal Health. Further Animal Quarantine Department has been attached with Pakistan Single Window for livestock trading facilitation.

The Economic Survey claims that the government is giving special attention to the livestock sector. This results in an improvement in Livestock GDP share. The livestock sector is developing through the improvement of disease control, breed improvement, and veterinary services. Further, the establishment of a disease control compartment under CPEC has also been implemented. Along with this, work is in progress on local vaccine production for foot-and-mouth disease.
