Due to exports without meeting the domestic needs, the prices of milk and many agricultural commodities have increased drastically. High production of various commodities including rice polish, straw are also being exported without meeting the domestic needs. In these circumstances, the cost of production of feed has increased to an unbearable level, which has also increased the cost of milk production.
These views were expressed by Dr. Arshad Zafar, Chairman Pakistan Cattle Feed Association, during a press conference in Lahore. He further said that although milk production has increased immensely, due to price capping of milk, dairy farmers are not getting the price, due to which farmers are not able to pay the price of feed. He added that if the situation continues like this, we will stop the supply of feed and lock the feed mills.
Dairy and Cattle Farmers Association President Shakir Umar Gujjar said that the government is forcing dairy farmers to sell as per the notification issued two decades (20 years) ago. It is very important that the milk prices be increased by at least Rs 55 per liter according to the cost of production or else the price of milk should be decided on the basis of supply and demand.
Shakir Umar Gujjar further said that if this situation continues, we will face a severe milk crisis and fresh milk will not be available for drinking across the country. He demanded that the government issue a notification to increase milk prices in every city of the country and stop the export of commodities and high products.
