Addressing the ceremony, Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Dost Muhammad Baloch appreciated the efforts of Prof. Marghzani and Director ORIC Dr. Imdadullah for the successful organization of the workshop. He said that the university administration will continue to support such projects and programs in the future.
Types of Preparation of Camel Milk Ice Cream
In the two-day workshop, the participants were told about the preparation of different types of flavored camel ice cream at appropriate temperatures using different proportions of sugar, ice cream powder, fresh cream, flavors and food colors from pure camel milk. Faculty members and local people as well as students also received training in the preparation of camel ice cream.
Director of the Camel Ice Cream Project and Chairman of the Animal Nutrition Department, Professor Dr. Elahi Bakhsh Marghzani, said that this project to prepare camel milk ice cream is in its final stages with the support of the Balochistan government. He said that this workshop is the last awareness campaign of this project. Experiments were also conducted in this project on making yogurt from camel milk.
Camel Milk Yogurt
He said that yogurt can be made from camel milk by mixing 30-40 percent cow, buffalo, sheep or goat milk. Yogurt can also be made from pure camel milk, but for this, an enzyme is required which is not available in Pakistan.
He said that after the successful experiment of making ice cream, it is being marketed for the first time in Pakistan at the community level and this is further strengthening the awareness campaign.
Research on Camel
Professor Elahi Bakhsh further said that the largest number of camels in Pakistan are found in Balochistan, which is 0.42 million and this is 41 percent of the total camel population in Pakistan. This natural asset is suffering from neglect by government patronage, welfare institutions and research.
He said that in the current developed era, the traditional use of this animal has become almost non-existent. If the natural capabilities of this animal are not realized and not taken advantage of, it will become extinct in the near future and future generations will be deprived of it.
Professor Marghzani said that keeping these concerns in mind, Lasbela University has prepared special projects on camel research. These projects include the current traditional breeding of camel breeds, understanding of productivity, training of camel breeders and awareness for the public as well as various activities related to technology transfer. He said that in this context, a project was completed last year with the support of Pakistan Agricultural Research Council and the preparation of camel ice cream is also a link in this chain.
He thanked the Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Dost Muhammad for his cooperation.
