Bovine Sexed Semen Production in Pakistan by Green Corporate Livestock Initiative (GCLI)

Green Corporate Livestock Initiatives has started Bovine Sexed Semen Production in Pakistan. GCLI has established state of the art Sexed Semen Lab at Okara based on Ultra Plus Sexed Semen Technology of ST Genetics. This initiative will enable livestock and dairy farmers to find sexed cattle semen at economical rates. GCLI is also moving towards Sexed Embryos production.

GCLI agreement with ST Genetics includes a five-year technology partnership under which any future advancements in sexing technology will automatically be transferred to Pakistan.

Importance of Sexed Semen in Bovine Genetics

In traditional breeding systems and artificial insemination, there is 50% probability of male or female calf birth. This hinders herd management goals, especially in the dairy sector where female calves are far more valuable. The introduction of Bovine sexed semen technology changes this scenario by enabling the selection of the desired calf gender. Dairy Farmers can select the semen for a female calf before insemination. Moreover, in the case of meat animals, farmer can select male sexed cattle semen.

This technology is especially beneficial for dairy farmers who need to continuously expand their herd with productive female animals. The accuracy and efficiency of this advanced technology improve economic outcomes, enhance genetic advancement, and reduce unnecessary costs associated with non-productive male calves.

Ultra Plus Sexed Semen Technology by ST Genetics

ST Genetics, a global leader in livestock genetic innovation, is the developer of Ultra Plus sexed semen technology. Through this technology, male and female sperms are sorted, while desired sperms are preserved.

This next-generation method offers remarkable improvements in sperm sorting speed, viability, and conception rates. Ultra Plus technology achieves 92 to 95 percent sex accuracy, ensuring that the majority of offspring are of the desired gender, while still maintaining high fertility levels comparable to conventional semen.

Unlike earlier sexing methods, Ultra Plus is engineered for maximum efficiency, enabling a higher number of doses per unit of semen collected. This leads to more widespread usage and ultimately greater access for farmers. This technology is available now at Sexed Semen Lab in Okara.

Local Production: A Game-Changer for Pakistan

Before this initiative, Pakistan depended heavily on imported sexed cattle semen, which was costly and limited in supply. The Green Corporate Livestock Initiative has now established local Sexed Semen Lab (production facility), drastically reducing the cost per semen straw. By cutting costs and removing import barriers, this development allows thousands of farmers to access high-quality, gender-specific genetics.

Sexed Embryos Production

The combination of sexed cattle semen with In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF) will soon make sexed embryo production possible. Traditionally, when embryos are produced and implanted, the gender remains unknown until birth. With the use of sexed cattle semen during embryo development, it becomes feasible to determine the gender beforehand.

This advancement means sexed embryos can be produced using ova from genetically elite females and semen from top-tier bulls, producing a guaranteed high-performance female embryo or male embryo. The resulting calf will carry the best traits of both parents.
