Bovine Embryo Cryopreservation Project Approved by HEC
The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has approved a grant of Rs. 18.8 million for an important research project under the National Research Program for Universities (NRPU). This project is on Optimization of Slow Freezing and Vitrification Techniques for Efficient Bovine Embryo Cryopreservation. This Bovine Embryo Cryopreservation project has been awarded to Dr. Muhammad Asif, Principal Scientist at the Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences (PIEAS).
Bovine Embryo Cryopreservation Project
The research will focus on improving slow freezing and vitrification techniques for the preservation of bovine embryos. Its objective is to support better breeding, increase productivity, and promote superior genetic traits in livestock.

Collaboration with Vitagene Farms
A key feature of this project is that Vita Gene Farms will play a major role as a collaborator. All practical research will be carried out at Vita Gene Farms, where the Vita Gene Breed Improvement and Research Center has been established. This center has a modern in vitro fertilization (IVF) laboratory equipped with advanced facilities for embryo production and preservation.
Vitagene Farms; Breed Improvement and Research Centre
Dr. Qaisar Shahzad, Co-Investigator of the project and President of Vita Gene Farms, welcomed the approval of the project. He said that this research will help improve the breeds of dairy and meat-producing animals in Pakistan. Dr Qaisar Shahzad added that the use of modern technology will also benefit the livestock sector.
He further stated that when academic institutions and the private sector work together, new opportunities for research and practical development open up in the country. Vita Gene Farms is playing an important role in this regard and will continue to contribute to such projects in the future. He also congratulated Dr. Asif on the approval of the project.
