Hipra University Theoretical Course was organized at Arid University. This course was on Avian Metapneumovirus –  AMPV in Poultry. Department of Livestock Production and Management of Arid University organized this. Furthermore, Hipra Pakistan also collaborated. Experts highlighted the different aspects of AMPV Poultry and Swollen Head Syndrome in chickens.

Avian Metapneumovirus – AMPV in Poultry

Poultry as well as other birds including wild birds are the reservoir. This virus causes disease in chicken, turkey, and ducks primarily. Besides the upper respiratory tract, it also affects the reproductive system. It causes rhinotracheitis in turkey. On the other hand, in chickens, this virus causes swollen head syndrome.

As wild birds are natural reservoirs, so its spread is also associated with migratory birds. Within a flock or between flocks, it may spread horizontally. Furthermore, the cause of such spread may be direct contact. It may also spread through contact with contaminated material.

In chickens, this virus causes swollen head syndrome. In this condition, there is swelling of the sinuses. Besides this, signs include frothy eyes, nasal discharge, and torticollis. Opisthotonos occurs due to ear infection.

This disease is associated with economic losses. It causes a drop in egg production and quality.

Avian Metapneumovirus Course

More than 100 participants were present for the course. Global Product Manager Dr. Juan Luis Criado delivered the talk.  Dr. Javaid Iqbal and Dr. Nasir Mukhtar also spoke. They focused on Avian metapneumovirus as well as on swollen head syndrome. Besides this technical discussion, a quiz was also a part.

Dr. Malik Burhan Yousaf designed and lead this event. He is GM at Hipra Pakistan. Dr. Nasir Mukthar was the chief organizer.
