Livestock Department Gilgit Baltistan – Department of Livestock, Dairy Development, and Poultry Production GB

The Department of Livestock, Dairy Development, and Poultry Production Gilgit Baltistan (Livestock Department GB) is playing its role for the development of livestock and poultry in Gilgit Baltistan. It focuses on animal health services, breeding services, and disease diagnostic services. Along with conventional livestock, Livestock Department Gilgit Baltistan is also focusing on Yak health and production.

Directorates of Livestock Department Gilgit Baltistan

Department of Livestock, Dairy Development, and Poultry Production Gilgit Baltistan falls under the ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries. The director Livestock, Dairy Development, and Poultry Production leads the department. Further, it has deputy directors for different wings.

Deputy Directors at District Levels

Each district in Gilgit Baltistan has a Deputy Director to monitor the services for the farmers. Department of Livestock, Dairy Development, and Poultry Production Gilgit Baltistan has Veterinary hospitals and veterinary dispensaries to provide services. Each district is also equipped with a veterinary ambulance. A team of veterinary officers and para-veterinary staff provide the services of health and breeding along with advisory services to the farmers.

Disease Investigation Officer

Department of Livestock, Dairy Development, and Poultry Production Gilgit Baltistan has seven main diagnostic labs in different districts under Disease investigation officer. This lab network provides disease diagnostic services along with disease reporting and surveillance.

Deputy Director Poultry Production – Livestock Department Gilgit Baltistan

Deputy Director Poultry Production oversees the development and promotion of the poultry sector. Livestock Department GB has three poultry farms, one in Skardu and two in Gilgit District. It also focuses on the training of poultry farmers in GB.

Deputy Director Training

The focus of this office is on the capacity building and skills development of veterinarians, para-veterinary staff, and livestock farmers.

Senior Research Officer – Livestock Department Gilgit Baltistan

This officer supports the Livestock Department GB through research work on livestock. Segments of breed improvement and semen production are also under this office.

This post of the Department of Livestock, Dairy Development, and Poultry Production Gilgit Baltistan is responsible for strategic planning, policy development, and administrative management of the departments.

Yak in Gilgit Baltistan 

Yak is an interesting component of livestock in GB. It is a highly beautiful and attractive animal that has cultural and economic importance for the local communities. Livestock Department GB is especially focusing on this animal. It promotes research on yak and strengthens the networking of yak farmers. It is also promoting model yak farming projects. The department also collaborates with Virtual University Pakistan and the University of Baltistan to organize the International Conference on the Yak.
