It also promote awareness about the threats octopuses face in the oceans. However, they face many threats such as overfishing, pollution, and climate change. According to reports, The Octopus News Magazine Online (TONMO) was behind establishing the day for octopuses. Purpose of World Octopus Day
Mainly, the World Octopus day celebrated to raise awareness about the octopus threats they face and marine conservation. However, these threats include pollution, overfishing, climate change and octopus farming. More importantly, they face threats due to increasing demand of octopus meat. Therefore, octopus meat demand increases the fishing. So, this day helps to promote awareness regarding less use of their meat. The day educates people to support sustainable fishing and ethical seafood consumption.
Similarly, habitat destruction is also a big challenge for their survival. Coastal development and coral reef damage destroy the octopus habitats. In these habitats octopuses live and breed. These habitats are their hiding places for protection and egg-laying. Therefore, this destruction of habitats directly reduces their survival rates.
In addition, this day raises voice against octopus farming to save them. In octopus farming, octopuses raised for their meat. They have different abilities like intelligence, creativity, & problem solving nature. Moreover, these are solitary animals. Therefore, all these abilities make them un suitable for confinement.
The day also educates people about the abilities of octopuses and force people to stop octopus farming.

What are octopuses?
Octopuses are eight limbed mollusks and known for their intelligence, creativity, flexibility and unique anatomy. They belong to the order octopoda & class cephalopoda. However, the class cephalopoda also includes squids, cuttlefish, and nautiluses. There are over 300 species of octopus found across the world’s oceans.
The latin word octopus derived from Greek name oktōpous meaning eight-feet. They have strong & flexible eight limbs. Notably, each limb can move independently. In addition, they can change color in one-tenth of a second. They are invertibrates.
Most importantly, octopus has three hearts, two branchial or gill hearts and one systemic heart. These branchial hearts pump blood through the gills, while systemic heart pumps oxygenated blood to the rest of the body. Their blood color is blue because their blood contains the copper-rich protein heamocyanin to transport oxygen.
Octopuses Habitats
They live in almost all oceans around the world. But, specifically found in warm or tropical waters. Particularly, they live in coastal regions with rocky crevices and coral reefs, but some species adapted to live in deep sea.

Octopuses play an important role in maintaining the marine biodiversity through regulating populations of crabs, mollusks, and fish. They serve as prey for sharks, dolphins, and larger marine animals. Therefore, through octopus conservation we can help maintaining marine biodiversity & save the octopus.
