Hippos Characteristics
Hippopotamus belongs to the family Hippopotamidae. They are large, semi-aquatic mammals. The Latin word Hippopotamus derived from the Greek word meaning horse of the river. They live in sub-Saharan Africa. Apart this, they possess several unique characteristics that set them apart from other land animals.
Adult hippos have weight between 1,500 to 4,000 kg. Their size makes them one of the heaviest land animals. Despite their bulk size, they can run up to 30 km/h on land. Their head contains nearly one-third of their body weight. Their head has a broad, rounded snout. They spend most of their time in water to stay cool in the African severe heat. The nostrils and eyes are located on top of their heads. Moreover, they possess a unique ability to close their nostrils when submerged underwater. Although they may appear calm, but can be aggressive when threatened. They have powerful jaws. Therefore, their aggressive nature makes them one of Africa’s most dangerous animals.
Significantly, they live in groups. These groups are called bloats or pods. This pod consists of around 10–30 individuals. Usually, pod led by a dominant male.

Hippos Habitat and Distribution
Hippos are native sub-Saharan Africa. They live in freshwater habitats like rivers, lakes, and swamps. These water bodies provide them shelter from the sun and protection from predators. The largest populations are found in countries like Zambia, Tanzania, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. However, due to habitat loss and human encroachment, their range is gradually shrinking.
Unfortunately, during droughts, they fight for water on overcrowded pools. Sometimes, these fights often trigger deadly territorial fights on water accessibility. Moreover, their grazing patterns create pathways for smaller species, enhancing biodiversity.
