UVAS observed World Fisheries Day 2023 at Ravi Campus. Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture organized different activities. Besides a seminar, they also conducted an awareness walk. On the other hand, business idea competition was also the part.

What is World Fisheries Day?

World fisheries day is an international day. This day highlights the importance of fisheries sector. World celebrate this day to emphasize its importance. This sector has importance in food security and the economy.

When is World Fisheries Day?

Different countries celebrate this on 21 November every year. Furthermore, the history of this day is not old. Since 1997, it is being celebrated. World forum of fish harvesters and fish workers joined in 1997. World Forum of Fisheries people was also formed. International bodies including FAO also observe this.

Why we celebrate World Fisheries Day?

The Purpose of this day is to highlight the importance of this sector. This day also acknowledges the fishermen.  Furthermore, this day also focus on the small scale fish farmers. The economic importance of this sector is also highlighted. Further, this day draws the attention of  policy makers towards the issues of this sector.

Seminar at UVAS

While addressing the audience in the seminar, Dr Muhammad Abid highlighted the importance. He discussed the role of fisheries and aquaculture in national economy. He also spoke about its importance in food security. Dr. Abid said Fisheries Department has launched different projects. Department is working to enhance fisheries production at large scale. Furthermore, he said that it is the need of hour to aware the people about fish eating habits. Besides working on production, department is also working on farmers education. In addition to this, mobile vans are giving services to the farmers.

Dr Hafeez ur Rehman highlighted the importance of healthy ocean ecosystems. Furthermore, he emphasized the role University for the development of this sector. In addition to this, he urged collaboration of academia and fish industry.

Prof Dr Saima highlighted the importance of awareness. We should aware public about fish eating habits. Besides this, she also focused the issue of water pollutions.

Besides this seminar, students participated in a walk. Further, they organized a business idea competition. World Fisheries Day 2023 was also celebrated at other places.
