World Bank Special Representative Giancarlo Ferrari visited Punjab. He met with the team of the Livestock and Dairy Development Department’s Lumpy Skin Disease Task Force at the Veterinary Research Institute, Lahore. The purpose of the visit was to review the steps taken by the Livestock Department of Punjab to control this emerging disease.
In the meeting with the experts of the Livestock Department, the current situation of Lumpy Skin Disease in the province, the department’s disease reporting/diagnosis and vaccination strategy were discussed in detail. Director General (Research) Dr. Abdul Rehman briefed the meeting about the current situation of the disease in Punjab.
The officials of the Livestock Department expressed keen interest in technical cooperation with the World Bank.
Giancarlo Ferrari said that effective steps have been taken by the Livestock Department to prevent Lumpy Skin Disease.
The Special Representative also appreciated the role of vaccine preparation, disease reporting and communication wing in the prevention measures of Lumpy Skin Disease. He said that this disease can be controlled quickly through restrictions on animal movement and effective vaccination strategy.
Livestock experts expressed their interest in technical cooperation with the World Bank in the areas of vaccine preparation and disease surveillance. The World Bank representative also visited the vaccine production units and quality control cell.
The meeting was also attended by Additional Secretary (Technical), Director General (Extension), Director Veterinary Research Institute, Director Communication, Director ADDRs and other officers of Livestock Punjab.
Giancarlo Ferrari also visited different areas to review the ground realities and disease control strategies. During this visit, he reviewed the severity of the disease, animal health and departmental measures.
On this occasion, Gian Carlo Ferrari interacted with the farmers and shared his suggestions regarding various aspects of the disease.
He instructed the farmers that in order to effectively control the disease, it is necessary to report the disease immediately so that the department can provide services to the farmers using its capabilities.
The Special Representative also attended the Kisan Livestock Meeting and discussed Lumpy Skin Disease with the farmers. He said that without the cooperation of the farmers, it is not possible to control this disease and according to experts, this disease can be controlled through timely vaccination. Furthermore, he also assured that this disease is not transmitted from infected animals to humans and the milk and meat of infected animals can be used.
The Director General (Extension), Director Lahore Division, Director Communication, Additional Director Sheikhupura and other officers of the Livestock Department were also present during the meeting with the farmers.
