General Characteristics of Primates

All primates are descendants of tree-dwellers. The characteristics of primates are adaptive that allow them to climb trees. They have forward-facing eyes that provide binocular vision. It means they have the ability to see things in three dimensions.

They have opposable thumbs and big toes. Due to this, they can move the thumb to touch the other fingers or toes. This allows them to grasp objects and branches effectively. Moreover, they have sensitive pads on their fingers and toes, which help them to manipulate small objects. In addition, they have highly movable shoulder and hip joints. Therefore, due to secure ball joints and strong clavicles or collarbones, they can climb and swing through trees. However, they use a variety of modes of movement, including brachiation (swinging by the arms), quadrupedalism (walking on all fours) knuckle-walking etc.
