After the establishment of Community Based Organizations (CBOs) in the Potohar region to prevent and control illegal hunting of wildlife, especially the Punjab Urial, and a significant increase in its reproduction, this model of CBOs is being considered for adoption throughout the province. Wildlife officials say that due to CBOs, the arrival of foreign hunters and trophy hunting in Pakistan have been promoted.

Urial Conservation Efforts in Punjab

The Punjab Wildlife Conservation Department has started considering adopting the model of Community Based Organizations to be formed for the protection of wildlife and prevention of illegal hunting throughout the province. Currently, five CBOs are registered in Punjab, of which two CBOs are registered in Jhelum, two in Chakwal district, and one is registered in Kalabagh, Mianwali. The establishment of CBOs in Punjab started in 2002. In about 17 years, five CBOs have been registered, but now their scope is being considered for expansion throughout the province.

Adoption of the CBO model in other districts of Punjab and said that the establishment of CBOs in Punjab was started after looking at Gilgit-Baltistan and this experiment has been very successful in Punjab. Due to CBOs, the wildlife found in the Potohar region, especially the Punjab Urial, has increased significantly. At present, the number of Urials in the Salt Range and Mianwali has been estimated at 3700, however, the survey report on the number of Urials will be completed in November.

Effects on Urial population in Salt range

CBO model is liked all over the world where the government as well as the local community play their role in the protection and reproduction of wildlife. The increase in the breeding of Urials in Punjab has also promoted the trend of hunting trophies, which has accelerated the arrival of foreign hunters to Pakistan. CBOs cannot function without hunting trophies because when domestic and foreign hunters come for hunting trophies, they pay a fee.

The money collected from the fees is spent on the breeding of wildlife in the same area, protection of the wild environment and provision of facilities to the local community. Usually, animals and birds that are close to their natural lifespan are offered in hunting trophies.

The average age of a fallow deer is 13 to 14 years. If an animal of this age is not hunted, it will die on its own. In trophy hunting, one animal helps save the lives of 100 other animals by sacrificing its life.

Extension of Model

After the successful model of CBOs in Jhelum, Chakwal and Kalabagh, CBOs will be formed in different districts of Punjab including Cholistan on the same model so that wildlife found in other areas of the province including the Chinkara deer found in Cholistan can be protected. The main objective of CBOs is to prevent illegal hunting of wildlife in local areas, take measures for their reproduction, and improve the wild environment.
