Bovine Ephemeral Fever symptoms include sever fever with weakness, increased respiration, decreased production, lameness, off feed and inability to stand. Furthermore, these symptoms remains for three days normally. Due to this reason, experts call it 3 day cow sickness. Moreover, virus of this disease spreads through flies and mosquitos etc. Treatment of 3 day sickness in cattle is possible. UVAS recommend to use NSAIDs and antibiotics for secondary infection. Moreover, Vet should use selenium and vitamin E to boost immunity. On the other hand, Ephemeral Fever Vaccine is also available.
Imported cows are more prone to this disease. In case of outbreak, farmers should include vitamin E, C, Calcium and Selenium. Moreover, farmers should avoid overcrowding and try to reduce stress. Besides, they should arrange vaccine and take measures to control flies and mosquitos.

Symptoms of Three Days Sickness
Bovine Ephemeral Fever, also commonly known as Three Days Sickness, is a specific disease of cows and buffaloes whose symptoms last for three or a few days. This disease is caused by a virus belonging to the Rhabdoviridae family. The disease is spread by mosquitoes, flies and other small flying insects.
The disease includes severe fever, weakness, loss of appetite, rapid breathing, decreased milk production, lameness or inability to stand up, and other symptoms. High-yielding and heavy-weight cows and buffaloes are more at risk from this disease. Accordingly, caution should be taken for local breed animals as well, but special caution should be taken in the case of imported and cross-bred animals.
Guidelines & Preventive Measures
- Do not keep too many animals on the premises and keep the animals under observation for various parasites.
- Take special care of cleanliness on the farm and do not let water accumulate anywhere. Spray special sprays on the animals to repel mosquitoes, flies, etc.
- Spray flies, mosquitoes on the floor, walls, and places where waste is collected.
- To prevent ticks, eliminate cracks, etc. on the walls, floors, etc. of the farm. Do not store wood, scraps, etc. on the farm.
- Apply lime to dry areas and spray ticks weekly.
- Experts say that in case of an attack of the disease, take special care of the animal. In case of illness, contact a qualified doctor. Use NSAIDs and antibiotics to prevent secondary infections as per the instructions issued for veterinary professionals.
- Use vitamin E and selenium etc. to increase immunity. If necessary, use calcium. Pour cold water on the body to reduce fever.
- Administer vaccination against this disease as per the instructions issued in collaboration with the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences Lahore and the Corporate Dairy Farmers Association.
- Increase the use of calcium, selenium, vitamin C and vitamin E etc. in the animal’s diet.
