Highlights at Third Annual Symposium on Udder Health

Experts highlighted the health of the udder for quality milk, the current situation of mastitis (breast cancer) in cows and buffaloes, pathological changes in the udder affected by breast cancer, new strategies for controlling breast cancer, milk quality considering breast cancer health, various products and treatment methods for the prevention and treatment of breast cancer in cattle, the role of vaccines for the prevention of breast cancer in cattle, the effects of milk on human immunity in the context of COVID-19 and other topics.

Experts said that mastitis is a disease that adversely affects the milk production capacity of the animal. It is very important to educate farmers to prevent this disease.

Recommendations for Udder Health

Experts emphasized that cleanliness of the animal shed must be taken care of to prevent breast cancer. The animal should be given a balanced and quality diet and no type of vaccine including oxytocin should be used for milking. Before milking, the udder should be cleaned and the udder should be dipped in a special medicine (Pre Dip) used before milking. A cloth or towel should be used only to clean the udder of the animal. It is better to use a special one and use it completely. If a machine is to be used, do not use the same towel on all the animals. The animal should not be seated immediately for it, adding that the size of the udder on an animal should be appropriate for the animal.

Experts also emphasized that the place where the animal sits should be cleaned regularly for milking the animal. Experts said that after milking one animal, wash your hands and milk another animal. The animal affected by mastitis should be milked last and kept separate from the rest of the animals. The milk of the affected animal should also be kept separate from the rest of the milk. Only check for mastitis with a test or any other relevant test. In this regard, some kind of guidance should be sought from a close and authoritative expert.

Treatments of Masitis and other aspects

Experts also discussed various drugs used in the treatment of mastitis, different treatment methods, modern diagnostic tools and vaccines.

Addressing the symposium, Professor Dr. Masood Rabbani appreciated the efforts of the organizers. He said that the economy of a dairy producer depends on the health of the udder of cows/buffaloes. If the udder of the dairy cattle is healthy, then the farmer who raises it will also be healthy and prosperous.

Dr. Muhammad Owais, the organizer of the symposium, said that the aim of organizing the symposium was to provide an online platform to livestock farmers, researchers and farm managers where various topics related to the udder disease of dairy cattle can be discussed and to make the participants aware of the latest research findings on the recent developments in research and services in the field of udder of cows and buffaloes.
