SAARC Chief Veterinary Officers Forum Meeting in Pakistan
SAARC Chief Veterinary Officers Meeting held in Islamabad in 2019. SAARC is also working in the field of food security and agriculture in the member countries, among other sectors. In this regard, the organization’s focus is also on the livestock sector.
SAARC Chief Veterinary Officers Forum
The association has formed a forum consisting of the Chief Veterinary Officers of the member countries, which aims to control transboundary animal diseases spreading from one country to another in South Asia and to take steps to improve veterinary services in the member countries. In this regard, this forum works on networking and mutual cooperation between veterinary institutions and veterinary professionals.
The South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) is an organization of South Asian countries comprising Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka. This organization consisting of eight countries was established in December 1985. The objective of the establishment of this association is to promote cooperation among the member countries for the development of the countries of South Asia and the welfare of their people.
SAARC Chief Veterinary Officers Forum Meeting
The SAARC Chief Veterinary Officers Forum meeting is held every two years. The seventh meeting of this forum was recently held in Pakistan. The meeting held in Islamabad was attended by relevant representatives of the SAARC countries. Representatives of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) and the SAARC Agricultural Research Center also participated in the meeting. Maldives could not attend the meeting.
Government Livestock Departments in Pakistan – Veterinary Departments
The fourth meeting of the Global Framework on Transboundary Animal Diseases (GF-TAD) of the World Food Organization and the World Organization for Animal Health was also held on this occasion. The representatives of the member countries discussed in detail the issues related to the livestock departments and the prevention of animal diseases spreading from one country to another. Experts said that transboundary diseases neither respect geographical boundaries nor are they bound by international laws.
Decisions of the meeting and Pakistan’s actions
The meeting decided that by 2028, Pest des Petits Ruminants disease will be eliminated from SAARC countries as per the Global Strategy. It was also decided to take steps as per the Global Action Plan for the Elimination of Rabies by 2030 as a project by SAARC countries.
