Strengthening Markets for Agriculture and Rural Transformation, DG Production chaired a meeting. Besides the SMART Program of World Bank, officers briefed about the performance of the PTP Program. On the other hand, RCCIB Jhang organized Progeny Testing Program Training for the staff. Prof. Dr. Zia ur Rehman Sheikh was the resource person for PTP Training. Director RCCIB Jhang Dr. Wajid Arshad Khan also joined. RCCIB Jhang is Research Centre for Conservation of Indigenous Breeds.

What is the SMART Program?
SMART Program of World Bank is Strengthening Markets for Agriculture and Rural Transformation. This is a loan which Govt. of Punjab contracted from the World Bank. SMART Program of World Bank supports different areas of agriculture including livestock. It is an agribusiness transformation project. Furthermore, this emphasizes market competitiveness and productivity enhancement. Besides Agriculture and Livestock, it also covers the Food and Industries Departments. The planning and Development Department coordinates it.

Its result areas include an increase in farm productivity along with the value of crops and livestock. Furthermore, it also focuses on the increase in value addition and competitiveness. On the other hand, resilience enhancement to climate change and natural disasters is also its area of the result. In Short, it is focusing on agribusiness development in Punjab.

What is the Progeny Testing Program? Although its technical information is commonly available but its simple elaboration is important for common understanding.
Progeny means the descendants of any organism or animal. Simply, progeny means the offspring or children of any animal. Progeny Testing Program is is the process of animal breeding for breed improvement or breed selection. This is common in livestock, specially in cows and buffalos.

In this process, a experts evaluate bull on the basis of the performance of its progeny. For example, we want to evaluate the genetic potential of a bull for milk production trait (means how much milk its daughters will produce). We can evaluate it on the basis of the recording of the milk production of its daughters.

In this process, expert select young bulls (sons of high performing bulls and cows). Then expert apply test on these bulls. Semen of these bulls is distributed in the selected herd. Daughters received of this bull are observed until calving. Then the milk production of these daughters is recorded for complete lactation. This record gives the evaluation of these bulls. Then experts select top progeny tested bulls and top recorded cows to produce next generation. The bulls of this generation are again tested. However, this process gives the evaluation of high performing bulls.
