Milk: A Basic Need, Not a Luxury
Milk is consumed in every household; it is not a luxury but a necessity and a basic need that is related to the betterment of the generations. Along with this, meat and eggs are also an important part of our diet.
The poultry industry in Pakistan is at its peak and with huge investment and the use of latest technology, the supply of meat and eggs is ensured. If we talk about milk, its production is supported by ordinary farmers, of which a large number are poor and small farmers who have two to ten animals. The important thing is that these small farmers are the backbone of the sector, who provide milk to us after working day and night using traditional methods. Along with this, there are also a number who are part of this sector through traditional methods with a little investment. Corporate and modern commercial farms with the latest technology and exotic animals are also present in this country, but in very small numbers.
Karachi’s Importance in Pakistan’s Dairy Industry
Karachi has a special importance in the dairy industry of Pakistan. There are a large number of cows and buffaloes in the livestock colonies around the city to supply milk to this big city. The farmers of these colonies have been associated with this sector for years and are supplying milk to the city.
If you ever happen to visit these colonies, you will find a different world. There is a special system here under which these people are farming. Similarly, milk reaches the people of the city from here under a special marketing system.
Dairy and Cattle Farmers Association
The farmers of these colonies of Karachi have formed an organization called Dairy and Cattle Farmers Association, which has now acquired national status. This association is fighting a real battle for the survival of livestock farmers in Pakistan and especially in Sindh. While it has made the public of Karachi realize the importance of livestock farmers, it has also played a fundamental role in bringing farmer-related issues to the attention of the common man.
Pakistan Poultry, Dairy and Livestock Expo (PPDL Expo)
The association recently organized an expo organized by Landmark Communication.
Organizing exhibitions in Pakistan is not a new thing, but this sector has grown a lot in the last ten years and organizing annual exhibitions related to different sectors has become a common trend. Exhibitions related to the livestock sector have also been organized for a long time and in this, the International Poultry Expo of the Pakistan Poultry Association is worth mentioning, which is one of the major exhibitions in Pakistan.
Exhibitions related to dairy are also organized, but due to some reasons, none of them could get a prominent place.
The three-day Pakistan Poultry, Dairy and Livestock Expo (PPDL Expo) was held at the Expo Center in Karachi. Although the poultry section was weak in this exhibition, the expo set an example for dairy. This is the first national dairy expo organized by real farmers and where real and all levels of farmers participated. Companies from all over Pakistan set up stalls in the expo, in which representatives of foreign companies also participated.
I personally know that the Dairy Association and its President Shakir Umar Gujjar along with the team have brought the Expo to this point after working day and night for the last seven to eight months.
President Mamnoon Hussain’s Address
The opening ceremony was held a day before the exhibition at a local hotel in Karachi. The event is historic for the livestock sector in that President Mamnoon Hussain attended it as the chief guest.
In his address, the President of Pakistan said that there is a lot of potential in the livestock and poultry sector of Pakistan at the local level and foreign investors should take advantage of the country’s investment-friendly policies.
He said that although there has been innovation in this sector, the quality of products like milk and meat has also led to many health and nutritional problems. The spread of unverified information in the society has further increased the anxiety. Substandard brands have not only affected the eating habits of people but have also increased the financial pressure on consumers. He said that among other reasons, one of the reasons for this is unprofessional behavior as well as the race to earn maximum profits.

دودھ کا استعمال ہر گھر میں ہوتا ہے ؛یہ عیاشی نہیں بلکہ ضرورت ہے اور بنیادی ضرورت کہ اس کا تعلق نسلوں کی بہتری سے ہے ۔ اس کے ساتھ گوشت اور انڈے بھی ہماری خوراک کا اہم حصہ ہیں ۔ پاکستان میں پولٹری انڈسٹری اپنے عروج پر ہے اور بہت بڑی سرمایہ کاری اور جدید ترین ٹیکنالوجی کے استعمال سے گوشت اور انڈوں کی فراہمی کویقینی بنائے ہوئے ہے۔اگر دودھ کی بات کریں تو اس کی پیداوار کو عام فارمرز سہارا دیے ہوئے ہیں جس میں بہت بڑی تعداد ان غریب اور چھوٹے فارمرز کی ہے جن کے پاس دو سے دس جانور ہیں ۔ اہم بات کہ یہ چھوٹے فارمرز سیکٹر میں ریڑھ کی ہڈی کی حیثیت رکھتے ہیں جو روایتی طریقوں کو استعمال میں لاتے ہوئے دن رات کی محنت کے بعد ہمارے لئے دودھ مہیا کرتے ہیں۔ اس کے ساتھ ساتھ ایسی تعداد بھی موجود ہے جو تھوڑی بڑی سرمایہ کار ی کے ساتھ روایتی طریقوں سے اس شعبے کا حصہ ہیں۔ جدید ترین ٹیکنالوجی اور غیر ملکی جانوروں کے ساتھ کارپوریٹ اور جدید کمرشل فارم بھی اسی ملک میں موجود ہیں مگر تعداد میں بہت کم ۔
پاکستان کی ڈیری انڈسٹری میں کراچی کی ایک الگ اہمیت ہے ۔اس بڑے شہر کو دودھ کی سپلائی کے لئے شہر کے گردلائیوسٹاک کالونیز میں بہت بڑی تعداد میں گائے اور بھینسیں موجود ہیں۔ ان کالونیز کے فارمر برسوں سے اس شعبہ سے منسلک ہیں اورشہر کو دودھ فراہم کر رہے ہیں۔ اگر آپ کو کبھی ان کالونیز میں جانے کا اتفاق ہو تو ایک الگ دنیا پائیں گے۔ یہاں کا ایک خاص سسٹم ہے جس کے تحت یہ لوگ فارمنگ کر رہے ہیں۔ اسی طرح ایک مخصوص مارکیٹنگ سسٹم کے تحت یہاں سے دودھ شہر کے لوگوں تک پہنچتا ہے۔
کراچی کی ان کالونیوں کے فارمرز نے ڈیری اینڈ کیٹل فارمرز ایسوسی ایشن کے نام سے ایک تنظیم بنا رکھی ہے جوکہ اب قومی حیثیت اختیار کر چکی ہے۔ یہ ایسوسی ایشن پاکستان اور خصوصاََ سندھ میں لائیوسٹاک فارمرز کی بقا کی حقیقی معنوں میں جنگ لڑ رہی ہے۔ اس نے جہاں کراچی کی پبلک کو لائیوسٹاک فارمر کی اہمیت کا احساس دلایا ہے وہاں فارمر سے متعلقہ مسائل کو عام آدمی کی زبان تک لانے میں بھی بنیادی کردار ادا کیا ہے۔ایسوسی ایشن نے گزشتہ دنوں لینڈ مارک کمیونیکیشن کے زیرِ انتظام ایک ایکسپو کا انعقاد کیا ۔
پاکستان میں نمائشوں کا انعقاد کوئی نئی چیز نہیں مگر اس شعبہ نے گزشتہ دس سالوں میں بہت ترقی کی ہے اور مختلف سیکٹرز سے متعلقہ سالانہ نمائشوں کا انعقاد ایک عام ٹرینڈ بن گیا ہے۔لائیوسٹاک سیکٹر سے متعلقہ نمائشوں کا انعقاد بھی عرصہ دراز سے ہو رہا ہے اور اس میں خاص طور پر پاکستان پولٹری ایسوسی ایشن کی انٹرنیشنل پولٹری ایکسپوقابلِ ذکر ہے جس کا شمار پاکستان کی بڑی نمائشوں میں ہے ۔ ڈیری کی مناسبت سے بھی نمائشوں کا انعقاد ہوتاہے مگر چند وجوہات کی بنیاد پر ان میں سے کوئی بھی اہم مقام حاصل نہیں کر سکی۔
سہ روزہ پاکستان پولٹری ، ڈیری اینڈ لائیوسٹاک ایکسپو (PPDL Expo) کراچی کے ایکسپو سنٹر میں منعقد ہوئی۔ اگرچہ اس نمائش میں پولٹری کا حصہ کمزور رہا مگر ڈیر ی کی مناسبت سے اس ایکسپو نے مثال قائم کر دی ۔ یہ قومی نوعیت کی پہلی ڈیری ایکسپو ہے جس کا انعقاد حقیقی فارمرز نے کیا اور جہاں شرکت بھی حقیقی اور ہر درجے کے فارمرز نے کی۔ ایکسپو میں پاکستان بھر سے کمپنیوں نے سٹال لگائے جن میں غیر ملکی کمپنیوں کے نمائندے بھی شریک ہوئے ۔ مجھے ذاتی طور پر اس بات کا علم ہے کہ ڈیری ایسوسی ایشن اور اس کے صدر شاکر عمر گجر نے ٹیم کے ہمراہ گزشتہ سات آٹھ مہینوں کی دن رات کی محنت کے بعد ایکسپو کو اس مقام پر پہنچایا ۔
افتتاحی تقریب نمائش سے ایک روز قبل کراچی کے مقامی ہوٹل میں منعقدہوئی ۔ لائیوسٹاک سیکٹر کے لئے اس تقریب کی تاریخی حیثیت اس لحاظ سے ہے کہ اس میں صدر ممنون حسین نے بطور مہمانِ خصوصی شرکت کی ۔ صدرِ پاکستان نے اپنے خطاب میں کہا کہ پاکستان کے لائیوسٹاک اور پولٹری سیکٹر میں مقامی سطح پر بہت پوٹینشل موجود ہے اور غیر ملکی سرمایہ کاروں کو ملک کی سرمایہ کاردوست پالیسیوں سے فائدہ اٹھانا چاہئے۔ انہوں نے کہا کہ اگرچہ اس شعبہ میں جدت آئی ہے مگر دودھ اور گوشت جیسی مصنوعات کی کوالٹی نیچے آنے سے صحت اور غذائیت کے بہت سے مسائل بھی پیدا ہوئے ہیں۔سوسائٹی میں غیر تصدیق شدہ معلومات کے پھیلاؤ نے پریشانی میں مزید اضافہ کیا ہے۔ غیر معیاری برینڈز نے نہ صرف لوگوں کی کھانے پینے کی عادات کو متاثر کیا ہے بلکہ اس سے صارفین پر مالی دباؤ میں بھی اضافہ ہوا ہے۔ انہوں نے کہا کہ دیگر وجوہات میں سے اس کی ایک وجہ نان پروفیشنل رویے کے ساتھ ساتھ زیادہ سے زیادہ منافع کمانے کی دوڑ ہے۔
