Poultry Price Fixing – Main Problem Facing Poultry Farming
The effects of poultry price fixing on chicken meat are widespread throughout the supply chain. This is the main problem facing poultry farming among the other poultry industry issues. It is affecting farmers, traders, shopkeepers, and consumers as well. Protests or disagreements between traders and shopkeepers over pricing also disrupt the supply chain. In such a situation, farmers are forced to sell the chickens at the production price and often incur losses. Farmers face low profits, lack of investment, and even cessation of farming due to these poultry industry problems. Dr. Masood Sadiq Chaudhry, a member of the Pakistan Poultry Association, expressed these views while discussing poultry price capping, the main problem facing poultry farming.

Effects of Poultry Price Fixing on Poultry Shopkeepers
Dr. Masood Sadiq said, low margins due to price capping and fixed rates particularly affect the business of shopkeepers. Shopkeepers are constantly forced to stop working in such a situation. While government intervention may temporarily benefit consumers, it may lead to continued losses for the poultry industry. It also leads to a low supply of chicken and a supply of substandard meat.

Recommendations for Poultry Industry issues
Dr. Masood Sadiq said, there is a need to take prudent measures at the government level to reduce the production cost of poultry farming. Further consensus among all stakeholders is paramount on different poultry industry problems including poultry price capping.
Pakistan Poultry Association along with other subsidiary organizations should negotiate with the government. They should redress the grievances of all stakeholders fairly. In consultation with all the stakeholders, formulation of a pricing plan is the need of time in which everyone is taken into account. Moreover, we should encourage open dialogue between government officials, farmers, traders, and shopkeepers. This will lead to mutually acceptable solutions after understanding the concerns of each party regarding the main problem facing poultry farming i.e. poultry price capping. Furthermore, it will also help resolve other poultry industry problems.

Dr. Masood Sadiq further said, Government should provide subsidies for feed, chicks, medicine, electricity, and other inputs to reduce production cost. To increase productivity and reduce waste, farmers will have to develop modern farming practices. Moreover, we have to find new market opportunities for further development of the poultry industry. For this, the local poultry processing industry should be encouraged as well as value-added products should be promoted.
He said that the effects of poultry price capping can be limited only with the consultation and consensus of all stakeholders.
