International Pallas Cat Day & Conservation

April 23 is International Pallas Cat Day. The purpose of this day is to sensitize the world to this wild Pallas Cat conservation. As its name was first described as Felis manul, it is also called Manul Cat.

Characteristics of Wild Pallas Cat

It is a small wild cat with long and dense grey fur. Fur has fewer visible markings. It has narrow black stripes on the back. Its eyes are round, short, and yellow. Moreover, its ears are short and lower on the sides of the head. Furthermore, the forehead of Felis Manul is light grey with small black spots. It has black lines on the cheeks from the corner of the eyes to the jaw joints. On the other hand, its lower lip and chin are white.  Besides this, its tail has seven black rings with black tips. Although, it looks like a domestic cat but due to long hair and fur, it seems big.

History, Distribution, and Habitat of Manul Cat

Peter Simon Pallas, in 1776 described this cat and named Felis Manul. He was a Prussian naturalist. He observed this cat in the vicinity of Lake Baikal. Later, it was recorded across the large region of central Asia, Himalayas, Tibetan Plateau, Shrublands, and grasslands of Mongolia, China, and Iran. In Pakistan, it is found in Chitral and surrounding areas. On the other hand, Other areas of Northern Pakistan could also be its potential Habitat.

Conservation Efforts

Climate change has affected the habitat of this Cat. IUCN has included in the red list since 2020 as the least concern. On the other hand, in some areas, it is near threatened.

The Pallas cats are one of the least studied cats. PICA is the project for Pallas cat Conservation on a global scale. In fact, PICA is Pallas Cat International Conservation Alliance. Moreover, this is the collaboration of collaboration of Royal Zoological Society of Scotland, Nordens Ark Zoo of Sweden, and the Snow Leopard Trust. This project started in 2016.

International Pallas Cat Day

This is the 6th International Pallas Cat Day. However, the purpose of the celebration is to raise global awareness to help support conservation efforts for this cat.
