To make the country economically stable, it is necessary that we export products made from Pakistani milk and meat along with crop production so that our country can prosper by earning foreign exchange. Seasonal change is a major problem in Pakistan, which led to a major flood last year, which left large-scale livestock farmers in financial crisis. These views were expressed by Federal Minister for Planning and Development Ahsan Iqbal at the inaugural ceremony of the International Conference on Health Security held in Lahore.
The conference was organized by the Veterinary Medicine Department of the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Lahore, in collaboration with the Higher Education Commission under CPEC.

Federal Minister Ahsan Iqbal further said on this occasion that to make the livestock sector active, there is a need to adopt modern technology and best farm practices in the country. Modern research and proper farm management are extremely beneficial for significantly increasing milk production in the country. He said that the connection of educational institutions and industries is very important for implementing modern business ideas. He appreciated the leadership of the Veterinary University for organizing a conference on the topic of information.
At the closing ceremony of the conference, Federal Minister for Education Rana Tanveer Hussain said that the dairy sector of our country is full of untapped potential and the dairy sector can be made more active by using modern technology and research.
He said that holding an international conference on the subject of information is an important step for the development of the livestock sector. He urged for increasing modern research work and also suggested including a course on climate change in the curriculum.

The conference was attended by Advisor Higher Education Commission Lieutenant General (R) Muhammad Asghar, Secretary Livestock Punjab Masood Anwar, Vice Chancellor Veterinary University Professor Dr. Naseem Ahmed, Vice Chancellor Education University Professor Dr. Talat Naseer Pasha, Member Production Sector Planning and Development Board Aslam Javed, Director General (CPEC) Higher Education Commission Dr. Safdar Ali Shah, and former Vice Chancellors of Veterinary University Professor Dr. Manzoor Ahmed and Professor Dr. Muhammad Nawaz.

UVAS Highlights Role During COVID-19 and Flood Relief Efforts
Professor Dr. Naseem Ahmed said that due to global warming, the temperature is increasing day by day, which is the main reason for the melting of glaciers and floods in the country, due to which agricultural production in the country is decreasing and in view of the increasing population, less than the required production is being obtained.
He said that during the Corona epidemic, the Veterinary University conducted free tests of more than seven lakh samples and established a Biosafety Level Three Lab, which worked day and night in line with the Punjab government. Moreover, he said that the university sent its relief teams to four provinces of the country to help the flood victims last year, who helped the victims in a transparent manner without discrimination.
He said that organizing an international conference under CPEC is extremely beneficial in terms of building the capacity of university manpower to learn value addition and processing skills of meat and milk in the future and getting opportunities to work together with experts from Chinese universities.
Lieutenant General (retd) Muhammad Asghar said that there are immense opportunities for development in terms of business in CPEC and there will also be an opportunity to work together with the Chinese and benefit from each other’s experiences.
Animal Health and Food Security in Health Security
Professor Talat Nasir Pasha said that the livestock sector is a basic component in the country in terms of food, so there is a need to provide maximum facilities of vaccines and medical treatment at the doorstep of poor farmers to increase their animal production.
Secretary Livestock Masood Anwar said on the occasion that the livestock sector is facing challenges like climate change, foot-and-mouth disease, food safety and food security. He said that in view of the growing population in the country, there is a need to increase food production. Organizing the conference is extremely important to overcome these issues and create a roadmap and formulate policies for the future.
Professor Dr. Jun Seok-che of the College of Veterinary Medicine, Seoul National University, Korea presented the recommendations of the conference.

One Health, Climate Change and Public Health Challenges in Health Security
The conference discussed various topics related to human and animal health, including rabies, various diseases transmitted from animals to humans, seasonal changes, food safety and security, water scarcity and management, malnutrition, stunting in growing children, preventing food waste, and One Health. Experts discussed health risks and it also called for international cooperation to address the issue.
Key Recommendations of the Conference
The conference recommended including diseases found in animals and humans, which pose a threat to health and food security, in the framework of national security.
The conference also recommended increasing the capacity of veterinary and health systems to provide quality health services during emergencies, such as disease outbreaks, as well as floods and other natural disasters.
