Details of Camel Leg Amputation Incident, Camel Association of Pakistan condemned

The injured camel (Kemi) was taken to Karachi. It is under treatment at CDRS Animal Shelter Home at Karachi. She was traumatized and literally weeping when reached at CDRS Animal Shelter Home in Memon Goth, Karachi. She tried to scream or start crying when she saw any person approaching her. All segments of Society strongly condemned this Camel Amputation Incident. Dr Muhammad YOUNAS of the Camel Association of Pakistan has written this report.

They brutally beat the camel and had its right leg cut off. This was an act of severe cruelty and gruesome (Friday, Jun 14, 2024). Now it should be ensured that culprits are brought to justice and the animal gets proper treatment and an artificial leg. The animal shelter staff is making efforts to get the injured camel well. The Governor of Sindh assured that he would bear the expenses of the camel’s treatment, including the cost of a prosthetic leg.

Ms Shazia Marri condemned the brutal treatment of the defenseless animal. However, she emphasized that those involved in such a terrible and barbaric act should face the harshest punishments to prevent future occurrences.

Dr Sheema Khan, of the CDRS Animal Shelter Home, said that the camel was traumatized after the camel amputation incident. She gets frightened by the crowd and new people. On the other hand, her wounds are being treated. However, she will be given an artificial leg once her wounds heal. She further said that the condition of the injured camel under treatment is improving. She said the swelling in Camel’s leg is also going away and Chammi was bandaged up again today (19/6/2024).

They are giving milk and juice to the camel. It is a good sign that she is eating and her appetite is good despite being in pain. Her wounds are being dressed, but she has become severely dehydrated.

The Livestock Department Sindh is also collaborating. Secretary Livestock and other officials also visited the CDRS Animal Shelter.

Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori has praised the provincial government for taking responsibility for the camel’s treatment. Moreover, he has demanded that the real culprits of Camel Amputation Incident be brought to task. The governor said that he had spoken to the UAE Consul General and other officials. They were working together to help the camel. He added that if necessary, the camel would be sent to Dubai for treatment. In response to the camel amputation incident, Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori promised to provide two camels to the owner of the injured camel.

Regarding the camel’s future, Sarah Jahangir, the Director of Comprehensive Disaster Response Services (CDRS) Benji Project confirmed that the animal will remain with the NPO permanently, as the original owner is not equipped to care for a disabled camel. She praised the efforts of all those who helped rescue the animal and emphasized that they were committed to ensuring the camel’s safety and comfort.

Camel Association of Pakistan

The Camel Association of Pakistan (CAP) is raising its voice against all forms of cruelty towards animals in Pakistan. The association condemns such atrocities inflicted on the animals, especially the camel. The Laws of cruelty already exist, they must be brought into action to punish such cruel and harsh people and stop any incident.

According to Media Reports, Five accused were arrested who maiming the camel, while two of them have confessed to the crime. They have been remanded in custody for four days by a district and sessions court. Police officials said the peasant had refused to identify the culprit and press charges against him, hence police lodged an FIR on behalf of the state against six unknown persons under sections 429 (Mischief by killing or maiming cattle) and 34 (common intention) of Pakistan Penal Code (PPC).
