President DCFA Pakistan demands to stop Illegal Slaughtering of Newborn Calves and Female Animals
President DCFA Pakistan has demanded to take notice of the illegal slaughtering of newborn calves and female cows, and buffalo on a daily basis.
In a detailed letter to Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, Prime Minister of Pakistan Shahbaz Sharif, Chief Minister Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah, Animal Husbandry Commissioner Dr Murtaza Hassan Andrabi and other officials, Shakir Umar Gujjar has drawn attention to the ongoing acute crisis in Pakistan’s livestock and dairy sector and demanded immediate national-level measures.
Illegal Slaughtering of Newborn Calves and Female Animals
Shakir Umar Gujjar says that the country is currently going through a serious phase of alarming shortage of livestock and rapid decline of milking animals, which has become a major threat to the economy, food security and rural livelihoods. According to Shakir Umar Gujjar, an average of four thousand valuable animals are being slaughtered in the country every day, including about seventeen hundred newborn calves and calves, while about twenty-three hundred young female cows and buffaloes. He warned that at this rate, more than 1.5 million milk-producing animals are being lost annually, which he called a destruction of national assets.

Low Milk Prices Hitting the Farmers
The letter from Shakir Umar Gujjar pointed out that dairy farmers are currently under severe financial pressure. He said that the average milk production of a buffalo is about six liters per day, while the cost of production of milk has reached Rs 270 per liter, but at the administrative level, prices are being fixed at Rs 200 or even less. He said that the decrease in the price of milk by about Rs 70 per liter in recent days has brought farmers close to bankruptcy, due to which they are being forced to slaughter them instead of raising animals.

President Dairy and Cattle Farmers Association Pakistan Shakir Umar Gujjar, citing a survey by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Karachi Trans Company, said that the number of animals in Karachi’s cattle colony has decreased from 400,000 to 189,000, which is clear evidence that the commercial dairy sector is rapidly declining. According to him, these figures are contrary to the official figures presented in the last twenty years, which do not reflect the ground realities.
Demand to stop Illegal Slaughtering
In his letter, Shakir Umar Gujjar has demanded that the slaughter of female animals and newborn calves be immediately banned by declaring it a national crime. Along with this, the price of milk should be implemented according to the cost of production and the cost of rearing the calf. A commercial calf rescue program should be started in the cattle colonies of big cities under the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC). He has also demanded transparent accountability of the elements responsible for providing incorrect figures.
