Illegal Hunting of Wild Animals
Wildlife is a symbol of natural beauty in every region. In many countries of the world, rare species of animals are carefully kept in forests so that their species can be reproduced. Similarly, deer are hunted for the sake of government officials as a form of entertainment. If local employees of the wildlife department take any action against this, they are politically transferred and expelled from the district. As a result, due to the hostile environment created for these animals, i.e. fear, these animals have stopped coming near the villages and their life becomes more difficult due to the lack of water in the forests during the intense summer. The access of hunters to these areas is increasing day by day due to the weakness of the wildlife protection network.
More Incidents
A similar incident took place a few days ago in the Vandhio area of Tharparkar, where ruthless hunters shot and killed two female deer. Hearing gunshots in the disturbing environment, the villagers gathered and the hunters managed to take away a deer and fled, leaving behind a dead deer, which was brought to the city for postmortem examination and a baby was also found to be a few days old. In this incident, the Wildlife Department was supposed to impose a fine of Rs 2.5 lakh for hunting a deer under the amended Wildlife Act 2020, but even after identifying the accused and identifying the villagers, action could not be taken for some reason.
Wildlife Laws and Hunting of Wild Animals
However, earlier the wildlife laws were very weak, in which a fine of a few thousand rupees was imposed on the accused, but according to the newly amended act, the fine for hunting a deer is Rs 2.5 lakh and the fine for hunting or taking a peacock is Rs 20,000 along with registering a case. When the office structure of the Wildlife Department Tharparkar was reviewed regarding the implementation of these laws, wildlife conservation and keeping a close watch on poachers.
Wildlife Zones in Tharparkar
According to the information received, the total area of the wildlife area divided into two category zones is 9,000 square kilometers. This include category zone area known as Run of Kutch has an area of 8,300 square kilometers, which includes the areas of Diplo, Islamkot, Tharparkar and Nangarparkar. The boundaries of the Chinkara Sanctuary Zone are 940 square kilometers, which includes the areas of Mithi and Chhachro, but the seriousness of the provincial government in saving wildlife can be gauged from the fact that only ten employees are posted in a desert area, while 35 posts have been lying vacant for a long time. There are only two vehicles for visits throughout the district.
Wildlife in Tharparkar
Tharparkar district, being a desert region, has also been a center of wildlife. The wildlife present here includes chinkara deer, nilgai, while the beautiful peacocks and pheasants are at the top among the birds. According to an estimate, at present, ten thousand deer, four hundred thousand peacocks, up to two hundred nilgai, and a large number of pheasants and rabbits are found in different areas of Thar, but at present, nilgai has become quite rare and the number of deer is also decreasing instead of increasing year by year, whereas ten years ago, deer used to gather in herds near wells like goats in the villages of the border belt at night and return to the forest in the morning.
People against Hunting of Wild Animals
Generally, the people of Thar have been against killing and hunting wildlife, but in the past few years, as the network of paved roads has spread to remote villages, the influx of hunters from other areas has been increasing. Due to the weakening of the legal grip, these poachers reach these areas with full preparation and with the cooperation of a few locals, they are targeting rare species of animals and at the same time, the sale of deer is also going on.
As a result, it has become practically impossible to protect wildlife. When contacted by Jang in this regard, Mir Ijaz Talpur, Deputy Conservator of Wildlife Department, said that they are trying their best to reach everywhere with the available resources, but due to shortage of staff, they are facing great problems. If at least ten employees are deployed in each tehsil, they can give better results. In response to the question of implementation of the new act, he said that the laws have been amended but no case has been registered according to them yet.
Meanwhile, there is a need to make the Tharparkar Wildlife Department fully functional and collect wildlife data, and at the same time, take immediate and indiscriminate action against the criminals found involved in this crime so that the wildlife of this region, which is a symbol of the natural beauty of the desert region, can be saved.
