GCLI and Livestock Department Punjab joined to provide Sexed Semen to the Farmers on Subsidy
An agreement has been signed between the Livestock Department Punjab and the Green Corporate Livestock Initiative (GCLI) to provide sex sorted semen to the livestock farmers of Punjab at affordable prices. Under the agreement, high-quality bovine sexed semen produced locally by the Green Corporate Livestock Initiative will be provided to the Livestock Department Punjab.
The agreement was signed by the Chief Executive Officer of the Green Corporate Livestock Initiative, Brigadier (R) Ehtesham Younis, and the Director Breed Improvement, Livestock Department, Punjab, Dr. Wajid Arshad Khan. Director Livestock GCLI, Colonel (R) Abdul Rehman Qureshi, and officers of the Livestock Department were also present on the occasion.
Details of Provision of Bovine Sexed Semen
The agreement was termed a historic step for the genetic improvement of livestock and increase in milk production in the province. Under the agreement, the sexed semen of Holstein Friesian will be inseminated into non-descript (non-breed) cows. Along with this, sex sorted semen of Sahiwal, Cholistani and Nili Ravi will also be provided for the relevant breeds. This semen will be provided to the registered farmers under the Progeny Testing Program for genetic improvement of local breeds.
The supply of sexed semen will be ensured in phases over the next three years. During the year 2025-26, 76,712, during the year 2026-27, 172,890 and during the year 2027-28, 179,590 doses of bovine sexed semen of Holstein Friesian breed will be provided in the field.
Meeting with Secretary Livestock
In this regard, Chief Executive Officer GCLI Brigadier (R) Ehtesham Younis also met with Secretary Livestock Ahmed Aziz Tarar. In the meeting, various issues related to the supply of sex sorted semen and other aspects of breed improvement as well as the development of the livestock sector were discussed.

On this occasion, it was informed that GCLI has established the world’s best technology-based sexed semen lab in Okara, where sex sorted semen of different breeds for dairy and meat animals is being prepared. For the provision of more quality bovine sexed semen, breeding bulls with the highest characteristics have been imported from the US, Brazil and other countries. Recently, Holstein Friesian bulls with the highest characteristics of more than 3200 TPI have also been imported from the US.
The provision of sex sorted semen will improve the genetic potential of animals, increase the number of female animals and improve milk production. The Secretary Livestock appreciated the production of sexed semen at the local level.
