Seminar on Flood and Animal Welfare organized by Brooke Pakistan
A seminar was organized on the topic of Flood 2022 and Animal Welfare in Pakistan in collaboration with Brook Pakistan, Livestock and Dairy Development Department Punjab and a welfare organization called Give Us Life Animal Welfare.
The aim of the seminar was to highlight the issues of animal welfare in the flood-affected areas and the relief activities by Brook Pakistan and other organizations. The seminar also included discussions between the government, educational institutions and civil society organizations regarding preparedness to deal with natural disasters and improving the ability of animal owners to face such situations and recover from them quickly.
Participation of Government Officials and Stakeholders
The chief guest of the seminar was Punjab Minister for Livestock Sardar Shahabuddin Khan. Members of the Provincial Assembly Ayesha Iqbal, Professor Masood Rabbani, Professor Dr. Anila Zameer Durrani, Tahira Rasool, Dr. Zubair Bari, Ayeza Haider, Aneza Khan and Aafia Khan, along with personalities from academia, NGOs, Animal Welfare Alliance and media were also part of the seminar.

The Provincial Minister for Livestock appreciated the seminar. He praised Brook Pakistan’s relief activities in the flood-affected areas. He said that livestock first faced lumpy disease and then the flood situation. The Livestock Department’s camps and provision of veterinary services were ongoing.
He said that he would ensure that animal welfare laws in the province are updated. He said that animals need fodder and food, for which welfare institutions should come forward.
Brook Pakistan Highlights Impact of Floods on Animals and Communities
Advocacy Manager Brook Muhammad Naeem drew attention to the large-scale impact of the floods on animals.
He also stressed on providing animal feed and veterinary care to the flood-affected communities.
Brook Pakistan’s Program Manager Dr. Javed Iqbal Gondal said that the floods affected 14 districts. 657 horse-breeding families were affected by the floods. Brook Pakistan provided first aid and emergency treatment to thirty thousand animals. Ten thousand bags of animal feed and 6000 bags of human food were distributed to animal-rearing families.
Need for Collaboration and Inclusion of Emergency Guidelines in Veterinary Education
He further said that government agencies and welfare organizations should work together in disaster situations and learn from each other’s experiences. He also stressed on making Livestock Emergency Guidelines and Standards a part of the veterinary curriculum.
Ahmed Umar Chaudhry also presented a special video on the flood relief operations of Brook Pakistan on this occasion which was appreciated by the audience.
