International Sawfish Day got some attention this week when WWF Pakistan put out a note about needing more people to work together on saving these fish. They are in real trouble and might disappear if nothing changes. The day itself is just meant to get folks thinking about how rare they have become and what is hurting them.

I think the classification puts most of them as critically endangered or at least endangered on the main lists. Rules from years ago already ban catching them in Sindh and Balochistan and there are bigger trade restrictions too that cover them.

These fish are related to sharks and stand out because of the long flat part on the front with the teeth along the sides. Three different ones have shown up in Pakistan before. Knife tooth and large comb kinds look like they might be gone from local spots now even though they were common once. The large tooth one still turns up in records now and then.

People used to catch quite a few in places like Miani Hor and around the Indus delta creeks. Overfishing and getting stuck in nets seem to be the biggest problems along with losing the places they live. Some also get taken for trade or fins. At least a handful of big ones were brought in over the last ten years from spots near Gwadar and Khajar Creek.

It is not totally clear how many might still be out there but groups want to check the main areas with special tests that pick up leftover traces in the water. If anything is found then maybe a plan can be made for those spots. Building more industry near the coast is making things worse too since it changes the habitat. Some laws already stop the catching and selling but keeping that going and stopping other threats will probably need bigger steps across regions.
