There is a need to ensure strict implementation of this policy in Punjab and also to implement it across the country. These views were expressed by Aneza Khan Umarzai, Chairperson of Give us Life Animal Welfare Society, along with Barrister Ahmed Napsota and Advocate Ezzat Fatima, at the Lahore Press Club. She said that although a policy has been approved in Punjab to control the population of dogs, it is not being fully implemented.
They are still being killed to control the population of dogs. She said that there are various weaknesses in the said policy. Along with improving the legislation regarding cruelty to animals, they should be made clear by bringing stricter punishments.
She said that under the policy, there is a need to control the population of dogs on the principle of TNVR. In this process, the animal is caught, sterilized and vaccinated and then released. After this, the animal is no longer able to breed. Due to rabies vaccination, it is no longer dangerous to human life. It is illegal to kill dogs under the policy.
Advocate Ezzat Fatima said that we are also raising our voice on various forums regarding birds being flown for charity, oil extraction from snakes and cruelty in pet markets.
In this regard, Aafia Khan and others said that those who feel for animals and have compassion for them should not be mocked and satirical reporting should not be done regarding them. The media should play its role responsibly regarding animal rights.
