Mastitis is a harmful disease found in sheep that not only affects the health of sheep but also reduces milk production, increasing the mortality rate in lambs and stopping their milk production are also among its disadvantages. Due to the release of germs in milk and changes in the components of milk, that medicine is not even suitable for human consumption. These views were expressed by Dr. Muhammad Ishtiaq.

Dr. Muhammad Ishtiaq further said that according to the Economic Survey of Pakistan, the total number of sheep in Pakistan is 31.6 million, from which 14 thousand tons of milk is obtained annually for human consumption. The reason for the increasing demand for sheep milk is the extra fat present in it, which is used in making butter and various bakery products.

Dr. Ishtiaq said that Thali sheep is an alternative breed of hot regions. Its production is not affected even in the hot summer season. The milk of Thali sheep is more than the rest of the sheep breeds, due to which its children also have good fertility.

Mastitis in Sheep

Dr. Ishtiaq said that two types of mastitis are found in sheep. Clinical mastitis is less common in sheep. Subclinical mastitis is very common in sheep, which has been found to be 45% in current research. The losses of latent mastitis are very high because there is no visible sign of this disease.

Research on the Diagnosis of Mastitis in Sheep

Dr. Muhammad Ishtiaq said that in the case of mycoplasma, the proportion of the enzyme Lactate Dehydrogenase present in milk increases. There are various research papers in this regard. To detect this disease in sheep, a study was conducted at the Veterinary College Jhang, for which a Lactate Dehydrogenase Assay kit was used. The study revealed that even in the first stage of scurvy, the ratio of Lactate Dehydrogenase enzyme in milk increases. In this study, RapID Staph Plus System was also used to diagnose scurvy through the presence of scurvy bacteria in milk.

Dr. Muhammad Ishtiaq thanked Professor Dr. Syed Ehtesham-ul-Haq, Departmental Head Professor Dr. Usman Waheed, Professor Dr. Muhammad Fayaz Qamar and Deputy Director Research and Development Center Rigo Battery Livestock and Dairy Development Haltab, Dr. Ghulam Akbar Buzdar for their guidance in this research work.

According to Dr. Muhammad Ishtiaq, using the results obtained from this study, latent scurvy in sheep can be diagnosed at a very early stage, which will be beneficial in reducing scurvy disease in sheep.
