Following a high-level meeting with Prime Minister Imran Khan, global agricultural multinational Cargill announced a major investment roadmap of over US$200 million (20 crore dollars) in Pakistan. Led by Marcel Smits, Head of Global Strategy and Chairman of Cargill Asia Pacific, alongside Gert-Jan van den Akker, President of Cargill Agricultural Supply Chain, the executive team finalized a strategy to deploy this capital over the next three to five years. The comprehensive plan targets a wide array of core industries, specifically focusing on agricultural trading, supply chains, fertilizers, seed oil processing, dairy farming, meat production, and animal feed businesses.
A central pillar of the investment includes introducing world-class innovations to modernize Pakistan’s flourishing dairy industry by shifting it toward international standards. Furthermore, the company aims to capitalize on evolving local consumption patterns, targeting the rising demand for edible oils and the expanding animal feed market, which is currently driven by steady progress in the domestic poultry sector. Marshall Smith noted that while Cargill had strongly desired to invest in Pakistan as early as 2012, the administration at the time failed to cooperate, whereas the current government’s transparent and business-friendly policies have significantly restored investor confidence. Welcoming the roadmap, the Prime Minister assured full logistical and import facilitation, highlighting that Cargill’s entry aligns perfectly with national objectives for agricultural development, quality enhancement, and import substitution.
