A Beluga Whale swims in the River Thames
A Beluga Whale swims in the River Thames. An Arctic beluga whale was spotted swimming strongly and feeding normally in the River Thames estuary outside London, far from its natural habitat. While the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) reported no immediate welfare concerns, local boats were cleared from the area because whales have acute hearing and stress easily.

The exceptional sighting—located 1,600 kilometers south of Iceland—marks the most southerly recording of a beluga in Britain. Experts from the Whale and Dolphin Conservation are monitoring the cetacean, noting that while belugas often visit river estuaries in the summer, prolonged stay in the tepid Thames poses a concern. Scientists hope the whale’s natural instincts will soon kick in, guiding it out into the North Sea and back north to the Arctic. Rescue teams remain on standby, referencing that the last reported beluga sightings in UK waters occurred in 2015.
