Objectives of the Day

This day encourages global collaboration to achieve food systems that support all people, especially vulnerable populations. Moreover, it advocates for access to healthy diets for all. Over 2.8 billion people around the world’s population are unable to afford a healthy diet. Therefore, the unavailability of healthy diets is a leading cause of malnutrition.

Food stands for nutrition, diversity, affordability, accessibility, and safety. So, a great diversity of nutritious foods should be available to everyone. Despite awareness, many people are suffering from hunger and malnutrition globally. WFD brings governments, NGOs, businesses, farmers, and individuals together to contribute in building a world where no one suffers from hunger.

The World Food Day Theme 2024 is “Right to foods for a better life and a better future.” This World Food Day theme 2024 highlights the importance of ensuring universal access to nutritious, diverse, and affordable safe food. According to FAO, food is a fundamental human right.

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is advocating for equitable food systems and policies that prioritize the right to healthy food for sustainable development. Each year, the day highlights different themes related to food security, nutrition, and sustainable agriculture.

World Food Day History

This day was first celebrated on October 16, 1981. It is celebrated on 16 October to mark the date of the founding of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations in 1945. It was created to raise awareness about global hunger and to encourage actions toward eradicating it.

According to W History, the FAO’s member countries established this day during the 20th FAO Conference in November 1979.  Since then it has been celebrated annually by more than 150 countries.

FAO, the International Fund for Agricultural Development, and the World Food Programme are global organizations that are concerned with global food security.

The idea of this Day was formally proposed by Dr. Pal Romany of Hungary.  Dr Pal Romany was a Hungarian agrarian engineer and served as a Minister of Agriculture and Food between 1975 and 1980. He played an active role in celebrating WFD. The first World Food Day in 1981 was celebrated with the theme “Food Comes First.”
