The monsoon rains have begun and the recent rains have broken a thirty-year record. In these circumstances, it becomes extremely important to protect livestock and pets from the harmful effects of rain and floods so that their productivity and health are maintained.

The rains not only affected urban and rural life but have also put our farmers and livestock farmers in difficulty. Since Pakistan is already facing severe problems due to climate change and there are concerns about unannounced release of flood water into the rivers by the neighboring country, we should be prepared for all kinds of severe flood and rain hazards and take precautionary measures to protect our livestock and pets from the effects of the weather.

Livestock Department Activities for Care of Animals in Rainy Season

The Livestock and Dairy Development Department of the Government of Punjab has set up flood relief camps in areas potentially affected by floods across the province and experienced veterinary doctors have been deployed to deal with all kinds of emergencies. Effective schedules for mobile veterinary dispensaries have also been issued, while orders have been issued to all departments to remain alert by canceling the leaves of field staff.

Through these emergency flood relief camps and mobile veterinary dispensaries of the Livestock Department of Punjab, not only immediate free treatment facilities are being provided to livestock and pets, but arrangements have also been completed to ensure ample availability of necessary vaccinations and preventive drugs to protect animals from various infectious diseases.

Effects of Rain on Animals Health

Animals affected by heavy rains and floods may face diseases like foot and mouth disease, foot and mouth disease, intestinal poisoning, pneumonia, hoof lesions, while poultry may face diseases like Rani Khet, and these diseases can cause economic loss to livestock farmers and also cause food shortages.

Free vaccination and treatment facilities are being provided to prevent these dangerous diseases and to reduce the losses caused by them.

Precautions for Livestock Owners During Heavy Rains

In these circumstances, livestock owners should keep their livestock and pets in dry and clean places to protect them from infectious diseases. In addition to providing dry fodder and straw to the livestock along with a balanced diet, adhere to the useful advice of expert veterinary doctors.

First of all, during the rainy season, make special arrangements to protect them from electric shock. Never tie animals to electric poles, etc. or tie animals under passing electric wires to avoid any kind of life-threatening and dangerous emergency.

To avoid loss of life and property due to rain and hail, try to keep sheep, goats and cows under a roof and take special care of the strength of the shed. In this season of heavy rains, try to get the floors of animal sheds and fences and other structures repaired at the earliest opportunity and ensure their regular cleaning.

Apart from this, along with providing clean and fresh water to the animals, always feed them green fodder mixed with straw or wheat straw. Make complete arrangements in advance to protect the animals from severe weather conditions.
