The saker falcon had been fitted with a tracking device in Russia as part of some migration study. It flew all the way from Siberia down through Pakistan but then the signal stopped moving for days which made people start looking into what happened. It seems the bird got caught by trappers somewhere in Balochistan and officials eventually found out it was in Loralai at first.
From there the falcon got moved around to other spots like Zhob before ending up in a house near Dera Ismail Khan. That area is pretty well known for this kind of thing. The transmitter was found later but the bird itself had already been sold off and taken out of the country to the Middle East.
I think around 600 or 700 falcons pass through there every year even ones coming in from Afghanistan. Pakistan signed some treaties and banned trapping these birds back in 2005 but it still happens. The government lets some get sent to places like Qatar or the UAE which does not really help things. Demand keeps growing so the illegal trapping probably will not slow down unless something changes with enforcement. It feels like the tracking gear itself did not hurt the bird much during flight but taking it off without the right tools could have caused problems which is maybe why they just left it on at first.
