Pakistan has a small number of snow leopards and experts are worried they could disappear before long. The animals live in only a few countries and Pakistan is one of them with numbers once thought to be around three hundred twenty to four hundred spread across the high ranges. Climate change seems to be the biggest problem since warmer temperatures are taking away the snowy areas they need.

Prey animals like ibex and markhor are also getting harder to find because of hunting and people moving into those spots. This pushes the cats toward farm animals which then leads to locals killing them to save their own herds. Trophy hunting plans might be making that worse without meaning to.

Tourism in places like Gilgit Baltistan adds more trouble since new spots are opening up without proper checks on how it affects the wildlife. Rules that already exist are not being followed well and there is not much effort to teach people about the risks. The Snow Leopard Foundation is looking at a big stretch of land to track how many cats are really left and what might help them. It feels like more needs to happen with protection though since things keep getting harder for the species.
