Insulin is always administered through injections rather than taken orally because, after swallowing, it cannot survive the acidic environment of the stomach and becomes ineffective. This is why, despite continuous efforts, an oral insulin product has not yet become a regular part of the pharmaceutical market.
A few years ago, researchers highlighted an interesting characteristic of camel milk. It contains insulin-like substances that are believed to help regulate blood sugar. The remarkable feature of these compounds is that they are more resistant to the stomach environment and can tolerate heat better than insulin itself. While the culture and traditions of Rohi are unique, the close relationship between its people and their animals is equally remarkable.
The semi-nomadic lifestyle of Cholistan depends largely on livestock, especially camels. It would not be wrong to say that camels provide livelihood to thousands of families living in Cholistan.
Among their many contributions, camel milk remains one of the greatest blessings for the people of the desert.
Pakistan’s camels belong to the single-humped dromedary breed, commonly found in Cholistan, Balochistan, and Sindh, while the two-humped camel is native to the cold mountainous regions of Central Asia.
The famous Marecha and Barela camel breeds of Cholistan are internationally recognized for their excellent milk production. Since these camels graze naturally on desert herbs, shrubs, and native vegetation, their milk is considered naturally organic.
Why Camel Milk Is So Special
Camel milk possesses a unique nutritional profile that distinguishes it from other types of milk.
It contains relatively low cholesterol while being naturally rich in essential vitamins, minerals, and high-quality proteins.
Its iron and Vitamin C content are several times higher than those found in conventional milk.
Because it is easier to digest, camel milk is particularly suitable for children and people with sensitive digestive systems.
It also helps strengthen the body’s natural immune system.
For generations, camel milk has been traditionally used in managing:

Recognizing the importance of camel milk, the Livestock Department of Punjab and the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS), Lahore have undertaken a commendable initiative to promote this valuable natural product.
Such initiatives not only introduce consumers to a highly nutritious alternative dairy product but also create better economic opportunities for the camel farmers of Cholistan, whose livelihoods depend heavily on livestock.
The project also opens new business opportunities for entrepreneurs interested in value-added dairy products and specialty milk.
Ensuring Quality from Farm to Consumer
Maintaining the quality of camel milk requires careful handling.
Fresh milk is collected soon after milking and transported under controlled conditions to processing facilities, where it undergoes quality testing, pasteurization, and hygienic bottling under the supervision of veterinary and dairy experts.
An important feature of this system is traceability. Each bottle carries information about its source, allowing consumers to know exactly where the milk originated. Such traceability helps build confidence in the purity and authenticity of the product.
Looking Ahead
Camel milk is far more than a traditional beverage of the desert.
It represents the rich livestock heritage of Cholistan, supports the livelihoods of desert communities, and offers exceptional nutritional value backed by growing scientific interest.
Promoting camel milk can strengthen Pakistan’s dairy sector, create new economic opportunities for camel farmers, encourage investment in value-added dairy products, and provide consumers with access to one of nature’s most unique and nutritious foods.
For the people of Cholistan, camel milk is not simply food—it is a symbol of their culture, their livelihood, and one of the desert’s greatest natural treasures.

انسولین کھانے کی بجائے ہمیشہ لگائی جاتی ہے، اس لئے کہ نگلنے کے بعد معدے کے ماحول کا یہ مقابلہ نہیں کر پاتی اور بے کار ہو جاتی ہے۔ یہی وجہ ہے کہ oral insulin بنانے کی مسلسل کوششوں کے باوجود ابھی تک ایسی کوئی پراڈکٹ مارکیٹ کا حصہ بن نہیں سکی۔ چند سال قبل علم میں یہ بات آئی کہ اونٹنی کے دودھ میں انسولین نما کوئی چیز پائی جاتی ہے جو شوگر کوکنٹرول کرنے میں کردار ادا کرتی ہے ۔ اس انسولین کی خصوصیت یہ ہے کہ معدے کا ماحول اس پر اثر انداز نہیں ہوتا اور یہ ہیٹ کو بھی برداشت کرتی ہے یعنی اونٹنی کے دودھ میں قدرتی طور پر oral insulin موجود ہے۔ بتانے پر خوشی تو ہوتی مگر اس سوال کے بعد کہ یہ دودھ ملے گا کہاں سے، یہ خوشی پھیکی پڑ جاتی کیونکہ بڑے شہروں میں اس کی فروخت عام نہیں۔ لیکن اب یہ مسئلہ حل ہو چکا ہے۔ حکومتِ پنجاب کے محکمہ لائیوسٹاک نے لاہور میں چولستان کی اونٹنیوں کے خالص دودھ کی فراہمی کو یقینی بنا دیا ہے۔
ترکی زبان کا لفظ چول ، معنی ریگستان، اسی سے نکلا ہے چولستان۔سندھ اور بھارت تک پھیلا یہ علاقہ جسے مقامی زبان میں روہی کہا جاتا ہے بہاولپور سے چند کلومیٹر کے فاصلے پر شروع ہوجاتا ہے ۔ روہی کی ثقافت اور یہاں کے رسم و رواج جہاں دلچسپی کے حامل ہیں وہاں اس علاقے کا رہن سہن اور یہاں کے لوگوں کا جانوروں سے لگاؤ بھی دیدنی ہے۔ نیم خانہ بدوشانہ اس زندگی کا بڑا انحصار لائیوسٹاک اور خصوصاََ اونٹ پر ہے۔ چولستان میں اونٹ پالا نہیں جاتا بلکہ یہاں کی ثقافت کا حصہ ہے ۔اگر یہ کہا جائے کہ اونٹ چولستان کے لوگوں کو پالتا ہے تو غلط نہیں ہو گا۔ اونٹ اور اس کا دودھ چولستان کے لوگوں کے لئے ایک ایسی نعمت ہے جس کا نعم البدل نہیں۔یہ اونٹ ایک کوہان والا ہے جو ہمارے ہاں چولستان کے ساتھ ساتھ بلوچستان اورسندھ میں بھی پایا جاتا ہے اور عربی نسل سے تعلق رکھتا ہے۔ دوسر ی جانب وسطی ایشیاکے سرد پہاڑی علاقوں کا دو کوہان والا اونٹ ہے ۔ چولستان کی مڑیچہ اور بریلہ نسل کی اونٹنیاں دودھ کی پیداوار کے لحاظ سے دنیا بھر میں مشہور ہیں اور انہی نسلوں کی اونٹنیوں کا خالص دودھ لاہور کے بڑے سٹوروں پر دستیاب ہے۔ چونکہ روہی کے یہ جانور قدرتی پودوں اور جڑی بوٹیوں پر پلتے ہیں ،اس لئے یہ دودھ آرگینک ہے۔ خوشی کی بات یہ ہے کہ لاہور کے بعد اب یہ دودھ فیصل آباد میں بھی ملے گا۔
کم کولیسٹرول کے ساتھ ساتھ وٹامن اور نمکیات سے بھر پور روہی کی یہ سوغات منفرد ہے۔ آئرن اوروٹامن سی اس میں کئی گنا زیاددہ پایا جاتا ہے۔ زود ہضم ہونے کی وجہ سے بچوں کے لئے بہترین ہے۔ قوت مدافعت میں اضافہ کرتا ہے۔ برسوں سے اس کا استعمال یرقان، الرجی، جوڑوں اور جلد کے مسائل اور دیگر بیماریوں کے علاج میں ہو رہا ہے۔ بچوں کی بیماری Autism اور بہت سی اعصابی بیماریوں کے علاج میں بھی اس کا استعمال مختلف ممالک میں ہوتا ہے۔ انسولین نما چیز کی موجودگی کے باعث یہ شوگر کے مریضوں کے لئے کسی نعمت سے کم نہیں۔ جلد کے بہت سے امراض میں بھی اس کی شہرت عام ہے۔ جلد کو نکھارنے اور نرم و ملائم کرنے کے ساتھ ساتھ جھریا ں کم کرنے کا باعث بنتا ہے، یہی وجہ ہے کہ اسے کاسمیٹکس میں استعمال کیا جاتا ہے۔ اونٹنی کے دودھ میں فیٹ قدرتی طور پر Homogenized ہوتی ہے جس کی وجہ سے ابالنے پر اس کے اوپر بالائی نہیں آتی۔ وٹامن سی کی زیادہ مقدار ہونے کی وجہ سے اسے ہلکی آنچ پر گرم کیا جاتا ہے تاکہ پھٹکریاں نہ بنیں۔

چوائی کے بعد ایک گھنٹے کے اندر دودھ اکٹھا کیا جاتا ہے اور پھر چولستان سے مخصوص ٹینکرز کے ذریعے پتوکی لایا جاتا ہے جہاں یونیورسٹی آف ویٹرنری اینڈ اینیمل سائنسز کے ماہرین کی نگرانی میں کوالٹی چیک کرنے کے بعد اسے پاسچرائز کرکے بوتلوں میں بھردیا جاتا ہے۔چولستان کے جن فارمرز سے دودھ اکٹھا کیا جاتا ہے انہیں حکومت نہ صرف دودھ کی قیمت اداکررہی ہے بلکہ محکمہ کی جانب سے انہیں منافع میں بھی حصہ دیا جائے گا۔ دودھ کو ٹریسبل بنانے کے لئے ہر بوتل پر رابطہ نمبر بھی درج ہے جہاں سے دودھ لیا گیا۔ اونٹنی کا یہ خالص ،آرگینک اور ٹریسبل دودھ لاہور اور فیصل آباد کے بڑے ڈیپارٹمنٹل سٹورز پر دستیاب ہے۔ امید ہے کہ محکمہ اور کاروباری طبقہ اسے باقی شہروں میں بھی پھیلائے گا۔
